 Academic Excellence

Faith Christian Academy is committed to providing a first-class academic experience in a Christ-centered atmosphere. Our dedicated teachers provide a positive learning environment for every child. The school’s teachers — all of which are born-again Christians — are the backbone of the academic foundation.

Preschool
Faith Christian provides preschool classes for three- and four-year-olds. Parents of three-year-olds may choose between our two- or five-day program. FCA offers a three-day and five-day program for four-year-olds. Our preschool program is academic and developmentally based. It is designed to help children develop the social and academic skills needed to succeed in elementary school.

Teachers incorporate age-appropriate and hands-on learning activities to make preschool fun and creative. Children have the opportunity to learn the alphabet, counting and number recognition, shapes, and colors, as well as pre-reading skills. Children develop their fine motor skills, which will lead to learning to print.  In addition, preschool provides a safe environment for children to make friends, play, and develop social skills.

Elementary school
Faith Christian Academy uses phonics to teach children strong reading skills in the early grades. This method is first introduced in preschool and built upon with greater emphasis in kindergarten, first, and second grades. Throughout elementary school, students are encouraged to develop reading skills through oral reading book reports and the summer reading program.

In addition to reading, kindergarten through fifth grade students study a variety of core subjects, including English, math, science, and history. Each morning begins with an age-appropriate Bible lesson. Students are encouraged in their memory skills during elementary grades through Scripture memorization, poem recitation, and classroom play.

Beginning in kindergarten, students receive special instruction in computers, art, library/research, music, and physical education. Each class also has daily recess, morning snack, and weekly chapel.

Resource help is available for students who need additional help individually or in a small group. Enrichment classes are offered to those students who welcome the extra challenge.

Middle School – Grades 6-8
Middle school runs a seven-period class schedule. Core classes for sixth and seventh graders include Bible, English, reading, math, science, and history. Sixth through eighth grade classes have gym three days a week. Classes also spend a nine-week period on each of the following extras, art, computers, and music.

Eighth grade core classes include Bible, which includes teaching logic, English, pre-algebra or algebra I, science, history, and foreign language, which is typically Spanish I. Middle school students switch classrooms for each class. Teachers incorporate a variety of media, including Powerpoint and video clips, into classroom instruction.

Students have the opportunity to take advanced courses through online instruction or by qualifying for high school courses.

High School – Grades 9-12
Faith Christian Academy’s high school instruction is designed to give each graduating senior the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in college or in the work world. High school classes vary depending on grade level, although Bible is taught daily in 9th-12th grades. As in the middle school, high school schedules can be individualized to meet the needs of the students.

The following courses are offered to high school students:
Math: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Consumer Math, Economics, and Pre-Calculus.
History: World Geography, World History, American History, and Government.
Science: Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Anatomy.
English: American Literature, British Literature, Composition.
Foreign language: Spanish and Latin.

Juniors and seniors are encouraged to enroll in dual-enrollment college courses. Through a partnership with Central Virginia Community College, students can receive high school credit by taking college courses, such as English 111 and 112, freshman composition classes. If the student earns a "B" or better in the course, FCA will reimburse the family for the cost of the class. In addition, a variety of Advanced Placement courses are offered through Virtual Virginia, online.

Technology Initiative
Through grant funding, Faith Christian Academy is revamping its technology program for the 2009-2010 school year. Sixteen new Dell desktop computers, complete with the latest software, are being placed in the middle and high school computer lab.

In addition, digital projectors, laptops, and screens are being installed in secondary classrooms to implement Powerpoint, video clips, and other online resources in teaching instruction. The school is also greatly increasing its Internet speed and capabilities in an effort to enrich the learning experience.

The school is also upgrading the elementary computer lab and increasing the Internet strength. A digital whiteboard, which will incorporate cutting-edge technology into special lessons, will be installed in the elementary lab.
